Recently, I had the honor of being interviewed recently by Yoga Simple about Kundalini Yoga, and about my personal practice and experience! When I was asked to do the interview, I had no idea that it would actually prove to be a learning experience. The questions that were asked were very thought provoking, and the answers that came forth were not ones that were floating around in my head - what came was truly from my heart space. Who would have thought that a simple interview would prove to be such a learning process. As I was answering the questions, one of my favorite quotes of Yogi Bhajan came to mind:
"If you want to learn something, read about it. If you want to understand something, write about it. If you want to master something, teach it."
The truth is, I haven't mastered anything - except that I have finally mastered knowing what my purpose and calling are. I know that teaching Kundalini Yoga allows me to be the Authentic Being that I am, and that this freedom to BE who I am brings me more peace and joy than I could have ever imagined.
When asked the simple question of what changed in myself after starting the practice, I thought "Everything changed.. where do I even begin to answer the question". So, I just paused, and what came forth surprised me a bit. In fact, nothing really changed the ME inside - only the outside changed. At first, this surprised me a bit, as the world want us to all think and believe that to be happy, we have to lose weight, get the perfect job, perfect partner, have white teeth, etc. Of course, this is nonsense, but these messages are so pervasive and consistent that I think on some subconscious level, we have come to believe them. Here is what I said in response to the question:
Q: What changes in yourself (physical, mental and spiritual) have you experienced as a result of being a Kundalini practioner (and teacher)?
A: Nothing changed about me - what changed was the way I lived my life. I became alive, joyful and authentic. I became the authentic me that I always was inside that longed for complete and outward expression. We all are called to express outwardly what we feel inside is here – why we are here on this earth. We all are unique individuals with a gift to give and express. Until we find that gift and find a way to express it, we will always be longing for something more. I stopped longing because I came home. That is the beautiful thing…we don’t really need to change our essence — we just need to find expression for it. That is what practicing Kundalini does for everyone who commits.
Here is an excerpt from the rest of the article:
"Some of the best things in life are unexpected. For me, this is particularly true with yoga. In my pursuit of learning more about the connection of the chakras to yoga, I stumbled upon Kundalini. Likely because Kundalini (I soon learned) is the energy of the consciousness.
Intrigued by the connection between energy centers and yoga, I set out to practice Kundalini yoga with the inspirational Vikki Taylor at the beautiful Divinitree Yoga and Arts Studio."

Food for thought: What is residing inside of you.. what special gift or talent do you have that you can teach to others that represents the Authentic YOU? We all have one. Each gift we possess is sacred, important and special. It's outward expression contributes a unique thread in this tapestry of Life, that completes the beauty of the whole. Without it, something valuable is missing. Give some thought to what your gift is and how you want to bring it forth into Life.
