Yoga Ten Minutes a Day Keeps the Stress Away

Is it really December already? We knew it was coming but are we prepared? No surprise if the answer is no. Research shows that the average adult today receives as much information (aka stimulation) in one week, as our great grandfathers did in their LIFETIME – a sobering explanation for why we feel that life is rushing by at break neck speed. So no wonder the HoliCraze has arrived like a tsunami, promising to pack our already overloaded lives with endless items on the To Do list, throwing us off schedule and balance with extra hours of shopping, traveling, cooking, obligatory parties and more sugar, alcohol, fat and carbs than should be legal. Research shows that both stress and depression brought on by holiday obligations can affect the immune system by increasing the level of the hormone cortisol that causes sickness such as colds and flu. Simple yoga breath and movement exercises have been proven to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system which relaxes the body and improves the immune system by simply increasing circulation and digestion within the body.
As wonderful as the holidays are, they can also be stressful, trigger heightened emotions, and take a toll on our physical and mental well-being if we are not protective and proactive. During this time, it is more important than ever to purposefully clear the calendar for some quiet, down time to allow the nervous and digestive systems to rest, and rejuvenate. If we don’t, we usually pay the price on the back end with extra pounds, emotional melt down, exhaustion, and most of all, NOT enjoying the holidays at all. Having done this myself more times than I care to admit, I created a simple, but effective 10 minute daily yoga practice that is guaranteed to melt the stress from the body and brain and give you the extra energy and peace that you need to not only survive the holidays, but enjoy them as well.
So, if you can’t get to your regular yoga class, or are traveling, here is a guaranteed practice that will keep you in balance – or use this daily practice to supplement your weekly yoga classes for extra support. I recommend that you do this yoga practice FIRST thing in the morning before the day rushes in, demanding your time and energy. If you can also do it in the evening, it would be ideal. Just ten minutes (or twenty) a day of yoga, breath, and meditation can make the difference between tension and tranquility.
I wish you all holidays filled with love, peace, joy, magic and miracles in Abundance!
